Get an MSO or Registration Paperwork for Your Kayak

How do I get an MSO or registration paperwork for my kayak?

Do kayaks come with a title?

Kayaks ship without a vehicle-style title. For registration, states rely on the HIN (Hull Identification Number) — a 12-character code stamped into the hull on the right-hand (starboard) side near the stern, within about 18 inches of the back of the boat. For step-by-step help locating it, see: Where can I find the HIN / Serial number on my kayak?

What if my state requires an MSO?

Some states require a Manufacturer's Statement of Origin (MSO) or an origin/ownership letter to register a kayak — especially for boats over a certain length or boats being motorized. If your boat did not come with paperwork (for example, it was bought used or second-hand), we can issue an MSO / origin letter for it.

How to request an MSO / origin letter

Reply to our customer support team with the following and we will prepare the document:

  • The HIN from your kayak (see link above for where to find it)
  • The model and brand (Riot, Vibe, or Boreal Design)
  • The full name and mailing address you want on the document
  • Proof of purchase, if available (helpful but not always required)

Important: we are not able to generate a second or replacement HIN. If the HIN has been removed or shaved off the hull, we cannot reissue it — keep looking, as it can be hard to spot.

For agents: verify the HIN against the build record in Zoho before issuing the MSO letter, and prepare it on Kayak Distribution letterhead. Applies across Riot, Vibe, and Boreal Design.
